Carl Mautz

Mautz began collecting and dealing historic photographs in 1973 in his hometown of Portland, Oregon. Beginning modestly with family photos, particularly images from his father's years as a football player at the University of Oregon in the early 1920s, he gradually expanded his interest into all formats of photography. Mautz relocated to California in 1977 where he practiced law in Yuba County. With the exception of a four year hiatus from 1981 to 1984, he continued collecting and dealing photographs while practicing law. In 1986, Mautz published his first reference book for photo collectors, Checklist of Western Photographers, and in 1991, he published his second book, Photographers: A Sourcebook for Historical Research with Peter Palmquist, California's pre-imminent photo historian as Editor-in-Chief. Mautz moved to Nevada City in 1995, retired from law and began publishing books on photography and California local history full time. In 1997 he published the latest edition of his western photographers checklist, but now expanded to short biographies and entitled Biographies of Western Photographers.

Mautz's collecting interests are unusual cartes-de-visite, particularly outdoor western American scenes, and California Indians in any format. His dealing has continued to emphasize historical images but has expanded into fine art photography. He is a regular participant in Stephen Cohen's Photo LA and Photo SF fine art photography shows, but his pride is the MPM Presents All Image Show that offers the widest variety of collectible images to an ever increasing collecting community.
