History of MPM Presents

In the early 1990s John McWilliams, a Stockton collector of early cased photographs of armed civilians and gold rush miners realized that trade shows available to collectors on the West Coast were dominated by camera dealers, and that collecting photographic images themselves had evolved to the point that image collectors could support a trade show free of cameras. With this end in mind, John began to talk to other dealers about his idea. Eventually, Graham Pilecki, owner of Pilecki's Camera Shop and a leading collector of daguerreotypes, and Carl Mautz, an attorney who collected cartes-de- visite and published books on the history of photography, agreed to promote an "all image" show in Emeryville, California, located conveniently at the East end of the Bay Bridge. The result was a show at the Holiday Inn next to the I-80 freeway in Emeryville in August, 1993. The show proved popular with both dealers and collectors from all states on the West Coast as well as several East Coast dealers, so another show followed in the Fall of 1994. Thereafter, the show has been held semi-annually in the Spring and Fall of each subsequent year, drawing collectors , gallery owners, curators and others interested in photographic imagery.
